Security Clearances

WHAT IS A SECURITY CLEARANCE?

A Security Clearance is a background check completed by the Federal Government that evaluates an individual’s reliability and loyalty to Canada. They are required in order to work in most Federal Government offices when access to protected documents is needed. The most common levels are Reliability or Enhanced (a 5 year background check) and Secret (a 10 year background check).

HOW DO YOU GET A SECURITY CLEARANCE?

The Department of Public Service and Procurement Canada with the RCMP processes the clearances but you need a registered sponsor to apply for the clearance. Altis Technology is registered with the Contract Security Program and can sponsor clearances for our candidates. After meeting with an Altis Technology Recruiter, they will determine with you the advantages of beginning the clearance process based on your experience, career path and eligibility for a clearance.

WHAT IS THE PROCESS FOR ACQUIRING A SECURITY CLEARANCE?

To begin the clearance process, you will be sent a link from the Government. You will then have to enter your personal information into the secure, government system. Once you have completed this, you need to submit your fingerprints electronically. This is done by going to a Fingerprint Service Provider. HOW LONG DOES IT TAKE?

The processing time for the clearance depends on the level of clearance and the complexity of conducting a review of your background. The processing times can be from three weeks to over a year. If you have lived outside of Canada within the past 5 years, it can take over a year to have your clearance processed or depending on where you lived, may not be possible for the government to process. Once completed, your Reliability and Secret Clearances are valid for 10 years but are subject to cancellation by the government if the clearance is not in use or if an issue arises that compromises the clearance.

WHAT IS THE COST?

There is no cost to obtaining a clearance but there is a cost to having your electronic fingerprints processed. Most fingerprinting services charge $50.00 plus H.S.T. for the fingerprints.

If you already have a clearance but you are unsure of the level and expiry date, we can check your clearance but will need your consent to do so.
